Black dogs may be encountered across northern England, almost always at night and in lonely places. They usually take the
form of a shaggy, black dog, as big as a full-grown sheep or a yearling calf, with glowing red eyes as big as saucers. Other reported forms include a headless man or woman who can vanish in a burst of flame, a white cat, or a rabbit. It can become invisible at will, but those nearby hear the sound of chains rattling as it walks.
Black dogs are solitary creatures. Each haunts a particular area, and never strays outside it. Sometimes it preys on lone travellers, but it usually ignores those who leave it alone. If challenged, though, it strikes out with one massive paw, leaving a wound that can only be healed by supernatural means. It can also act as a death-omen, leading the dogs of the neighbourhood in a howling procession to announce the imminent demise of some notable local person or simply laying across the threshold of the person’s house.
